The Women’s, Gender and Social Justice Association (WGSJ) reiterates our support and solidarity with Katy Fulfer (Associate Professor of Philosophy, University of Waterloo) and all students impacted by the hate-motivated attack in a gender studies classroom in 2023.
We echo Fulfer’s call to pay attention to the larger picture and societal context surrounding this attack, and her warning about the material impacts of “anti-gender” ideologies circulating in Canada, and globally. Marginalized groups are being wrongfully scapegoated for the political, economic, and environmental instability of the current moment. Institutions and individuals, especially politicians and community leaders, have a responsibility to condemn hateful rhetoric and to debunk mis- and disinformation that place our communities at risk for violence.
